On Tuesday 22 July 36 players played in the Summer Meeting and Seniors’ Championship at the Astbury GC to battle it out for the Round 1 of the Marjorie Wynne Thomas Memorial Trophy, the first of the Marjorie Wycherley Cup rounds (players with handicap Index limits of 20.5 – 40), the Ladies Senior Cup (Handicap limit 40), the Senior Ladies Championship Shield and the Jo Marvel Trophy.
Over 10 different clubs were represented covering all the trophy competitions and the gross, division 1 and division 2 prizes.
The gross prize went to Katelyn Wilkie with a gross 74, winning £40.00. In second place was Ann Peters of Shifnal with a gross 85.
Division 1 (to 20.4) was won by Lesley Smith from Shifnal with a nett 76, winning £40.00. In second place also with 76 but losing on the back 9 was Lucy Taylor of Horsehay winning £30.00
Division 2 (to 20.5 and above) first prize went to Kathleen Evans from Oswestry with a nett 74, winning £40.00. In second place with 80 was Jane Aston of Shifnal, winning £30.00
There were 5 twos Kathleen Evans (Oswestry), Jessica Keane (The Shropshire), Marie O’Sullivan (Shrewsbury), Alison Grove(Bridgnorth) and Jane Jones (Oswestry).
Round 1 of the Marjorie Wynne Thomas Memorial was taken by Katelyn Wilkie. Many congratulations. In second place with a gross of 84 was Ann Peters.
The first of the Marjorie Wycherley Cup rounds (players with handicap Index limits of 20.5 – 40). The best gross over 20.5 was taken by Kathleen Evans of Oswestry with a gross of 99. In second place was Jane Aston with a gross of 101.
The Ladies Senior Cup (Handicap limit 40). The winner was Kathleen Evans with a nett of 75. The runner up with a nett of 76 was Lesley Smith of Shifnal.
Senior Ladies Championship Shield – This competition has not quite finished, the knock-out to find the seniors champion for 2025 is to be played at The Astbury on MONDAY 28thJuly. The four competitors will be; Ann Peters (of Shifnal0, Marie O’Sullivan (of Shrewsbury), Isabel Green (of Shrewsbury) and Lucy Taylor (of Horsehay Village). The reserve is Jane Jones (of Oswestry).
Jo Marvel Trophy. The winner was Lucy Taylor of Horsehay Village with a gross of 89. Runner up was Mair Robinson with a gross of 96.
Notwithstanding the recent dry weather leaving most courses denuded of grass on fairways the Astbury proved to be green and lush. Catering was provided by ‘The Potting Shed’ the selection of snacks and drinks on offer were warmly received.
