Another golfing milestone was achieved on Sunday 16th August at Chevin GC where the last of this season’s 2nd Team matches was played. This was the first time an AWAY fixture had been played on a Weekend, with Chevin offering courtesy of the course and welcoming Shropshire with open arms. Despite the Derbyshire hospitality this was not going to be a picnic, the fairways were treacherous with the slopes in places being virtually unplayable and the greens beckoning like little oasis’s of normality. This was not going to be a match for the faint hearted.
By the time the foursomes reached Hole 10 at the top of the course all the pairings were down. Abi Randall from Shrewsbury and Helen Roberts from Llanymynech eventually lost 6 and 4 and Trish McGloin and Sara Bowden from the Shropshire lost 4 and 3. Laura Morris from Arscott and Isabel Green from Shrewsbury fought back on the back nine and halved their match on the 18th hole.
The first casualty in the afternoon was Abi who had to pull out due to a shoulder injury, but Shropshire had not finished yet. Laura who led out the singles never looked back and won her match 2 and 1. Isabel and Trish had exciting finishes, both halving their matched on the 18th in front of quite a gallery. Sara had pulled her match back but ran out of holes on the 17th and Helen lost her match on the hill against a very strong Derbyshire player.
The final result was a win for Derbyshire 6½ to 2½ which was a very respectable result in such conditions. Well done to the team and a big thank you to Chevin GC.
