History of the Shropshire Ladies’ County Golf Association
1921 November 30th. Inaugural Meeting to form Shropshire Ladies’ County Golf Club: Six Clubs – Shrewsbury; Wrekin; Church Stretton; Market Drayton; Hawkstone Park; Newport represented. Mrs Janet Blockley also present. Annual Subscription 2/6d.
1923 Mrs Janet Blockley first player for Shropshire (v Staffs) and first County Championship played.
1923 Midland Ladies Championships held at Stourbridge GC included a team from the Wrekin GC, Mrs Beard, Mrs Freeston & Mrs Roberts.
1925 Midland Ladies Championships held at Whitnash GC included a team from the Wrekin GC: Mrs Corser, Miss M Deedes who came 8th. & Mrs Roberts.
1927 Midland Ladies Championships held at Beau Desert GC included a team from the Wrekin GC: Mrs Corser who finished 9th., Miss Deedes & Mrs Janet Blockley.
1928 Midland Ladies Championships held at Blackwell GC included a team from Hawkstone Park GC: Mrs Hayward, Mrs Sheppard & Miss L Birkett. Miss M Barnes also played and finished 12th on 89 & 88.
1928 Name changed from SLCG. Club to SLCGA Association. County Colours instituted (a tie) to go to members of the Association.
1929 Whitchurch joined County Association, to make 7 affiliated clubs.
1930 Midland Ladies Championships held at Hollinwell GC (now known as Notts Ladies GC) included a team from Hawkstone Park GC: Mrs Shephard (now spelt with a ‘h’!), Miss Berkett (previously spelt with an ‘i’!) and Miss Deedes who won the Silver Medal for the runner up position.
1931 Late entries in County Competitions to pay extra 1/- (one shilling).
1931 Midland Ladies Championships held at Trentham GC included the same HPGC team as 1930 and Miss Barnes this year finished 5th.
1932 Ludlow and Oswestry joined the Association.
1932 Midland Ladies Championships held at Moseley GC included two Shropshire club teams, the Wrekin GC with Miss Clifford, Mrs Blockley & Mrs Beke and Hawkstone Park GC with Miss Hayward, Miss Black and Miss Barnes who qualified and lost in the 1st round of the knockout stages.
1933 Mary Black Cup first played on individual basis.
1934 County Trials instituted. Rota of courses made for Championship.
1934 Midland Ladies Championships held at Seacroft GC, Lincs included a team from Hawkstone Park GC of: Miss Barkett (presume it is Birkett!) who lost in Round 1, Miss Clifford and Miss Barnes who lost in the 2nd round after winning her 1st round match on the 19th hole, she had won 3 out of the first 4 holes in this match.
1935 Midland Ladies Championships held at Hawkstone Park GC included Teams from Ludlow GC: Miss W Hotchkiss, Miss Hankinson & Miss Molyneaux Seel: 3 Teams from Hawkstone Park GC: A- Miss Barnes, Miss Black & Mrs Sheppard, B- Mrs Rodenhurst, the Hon. Mrs Heathcote & Miss Hammond; C – and winners of the Handicap Team Prize Mrs Pearce, Miss Coghill & Mrs Beckett; Shrewsbury GC: Mrs Hayward, Mrs Kitchen & Miss Deedes and the Wrekin GC: Mrs Blockley, Miss Corser & Miss Lander. (Some players obviously were members of more than one club – see separate information and photo of event.)
1936 Presentation to Miss H Corser on retiring from office of Hon. Secretary & Hon. Treasurer.
1937 Fixture v Welsh Northern Counties inaugurated.
1938 Visit of S. African team to Shropshire. No form of match played as visitors were feeling exhausted.
1938 Midland Ladies Championships held at Streetley GC (now known as Sutton Coldfield Ladies GC) included a team from Hawkstone Park GC and they finished 4th. – Mrs Robertshaw, Miss Mary Black & Miss Birkett– (later played for Brockton Hall GC, Staffs).
1939 Second Team match played v Staffordshire (H and A)
1947 November 11th. Meeting held to reform Association.
1948 Rules of the Association revised. Miss J Lander played for Midlands v South West.
1949 Shifnal and Bridgnorth joined the Association, making 8 affiliated clubs.
1949 Team Championship at Sherringham GC, Norfolk included – Hawkstone Park GC, Mrs West, Mrs Darby & Miss Beddard.
1950 Annual Subscription raised from 2/6d to 5/-.
1950 Team Championship at Stourbridge included – Wrekin GC, Mrs Argles, Miss Lander, Miss Beddard (now Wrekin!) & Mrs Blockley.
1951 Match v Professionals instituted. Fixture v N Wales revived. Lilleshall joined the Association. Colours – brooches replaced County Ties.
1952 Mrs Argles played for Midlands v South West.
1952 Miss Beddard competed in the Midland Championship at Aldeburgh GC, Suffolk
1954 Midland Ladies Championship held at Hawkstone Park GC and Bridget Jackson won. Shrewsbury entered a team.
1954 Mrs Argles played for Midlands v South West.
1957 Annual Subscriptions raised to 7/6d.
1959 County Flag given to the Association by Miss M Beddard. Welshpool joined the Association (special concession).
1960 Mrs Argles LGU Councillor.
1961 Midland Ladies Championships held at Church Brampton, Northants and Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas from Ludlow GC qualified on 81 & 84 losing in the 1st round.
1962-3 Mrs Argles Chairman of English Selection Committee. County Team uniform introduced. Market Drayton joined Association.
1962 Midland Ladies Championships held at Moseley GC and again Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas from Ludlow GC qualified on 89 & 86 losing in the 1st round.
1963 Midland Ladies Championships held at Luffenham Heath GC, Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas from Ludlow GC qualified and lost in the 1st round.
1963-4 Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas was Chairman of Midlands Division of English Ladies Golf Association.
1965 Midland Foursomes held at Hawkstone Park
1965 Midland Ladies Championships held at Stratford upon Avon, Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas from Ludlow GC lost in the semi-finals to Jean Roles of Warks.
1966 Midland Ladies Championships held at Woodhall Spa GC, Mrs Marjorie Wynne Thomas from Ludlow GC played but did not qualify.
1968 Rules of Association revised. AGM separated from Autumn Meeting.
1968 Midland Ladies Championships held at South Staffs GC, Wolverhampton no Shropshire players qualified however Shropshire did enter a team as part of the West Midlands Championship: Gladys Geddes, Irene Sidaway, Sally Shrimpton, Nina Howells, Cynthia Scott & E Hampton.
1969 Midland Ladies Championships held at Sherwood Forrest GC, Sally Shrimpton from Ludlow GC qualified on 85 & 81 and lost in the 1st round.
1969 English Girls Championship held at Hawkstone Park. Mrs A Davies made Hon. Member.
1969-1970 Mrs Rhona Argles President of Midlands ELGA. (our records show 1967!)
1970 Annual Subscription raised to 10/-.
1970 Midland Ladies Championships held at Shifnal GC, Mrs N Howells from Bridgnorth qualified and lost in the 1st round.
1970 Midland Ladies Championship held at Shifnal GC, winner was Jenny Stant of Staffordshire.
Early 1970’s Jill Foster (Shrewsbury GC) was a member of the English Girls Training Squad.
1972 Foursomes event made into separate fixture in Autumn.
1973 Jillian Foster (Shrewsbury GC) chosen for Girls International (at Northampton). Miss M Beddard made Handicap Advisor for Shropshire. Clock and cheque given posthumously to Mrs A Davies.
1973 Midlands Sub Divisional finals held at Shifnal GC – Warks & Norfolk participated.
1974 County Sub Division Finals held at Shifnal (Warks v Norfolk in Final),
1974 Gladys Geddes (Shrewsbury) & Lyn Hughes (Oswestry’s Welsh Int. Junior) won the Midland Ladies Foursomes at South Staffs GC, Mary Dingley & Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin GC) came 3rd.
1976 Annual Subscription raised to £1.
1976 Jo Marvell & Jean Barrowclough (Wrekin) won through to the final of the Daily Mail Foursomes at Ross on Wye and finished Runners Up.
1978 New Flag bought. Rules of the Association revised. Presentation to Mrs S Shrimpton as recognition of 25 years playing in County Team.
1979 County Championships at Lilleshall Hall GC – quarter and semi finals were delayed by SNOW (1st May!) the final was played on Friday morning.
1979 Midland Foursomes held at Ludlow. Mrs K Ritchie appointed Handicap Advisor for Shropshire. Membership now over 300.
1980 Sherry Party held at Shifnal GC (1.5.80) to mark 50th County Championship. Past Champions present included: Mrs J Blockley, Mrs M Wycherley, Mrs R Argles, Mrs S Shrimpton, Mrs M Scott, Mrs S Tinsley (nee’ McLachlan), Miss J Dingley and Mrs S Pidgeon.
1980 Midland Ladies Championships held at Prestatyn GC, North Wales included a Team of Wrekin players, Miss J Dingley, Mrs M Cooper & Mrs S Pidgeon who qualified and lost in the 1st round to the eventual winner, Miss J Walters Cambs & Hunts.
1981 Championships played at Bridgnorth, when the final went into extra holes the greenkeepers had top dressed the greens on holes 1-3. The 19th hole was played – what is now the 4th and the 20th hole (final one) was the 10th.
1981 Midland Ladies Championships held at Handsworth GC saw a number of Shropshire entries but none qualified.
1982 Mrs S Shrimpton elected Deputy on ELGA Executive.
1982 County reached Sub Divisional finals at Prestatyn beaten by Cambs & Hunts.
1984 Midland Ladies Championship held Bridgnorth GC, Lesley Waring (now Fox), Worcs. the winner. Lesley had been a junior member of Ludlow GC. The Team Event was changed to a County Team rather than a Club Team.
Mid 1980’s Amanda Jackson was a member of the ELGA Under 15’s Training Squad, Vivien Saunders – National Coach, Sue Pidgeon – Overseer.
1984 SLCGA reached Sub Divisional finals at Gog Mag Gog GC, Cambs. Beaten by Staffs.
1984 Mrs R Argles made Hon. Member of Penina GC, Portugal.
1985 Annual Subscriptions raised to £2.
1986 Mrs Blocked died in April. Mrs S Shrimpton made Handicap Advisor for Shropshire and elected onto ELGA Executive. Miss M Sykes retired as Hon. Secretary.
1987 Rules of the Association revised. Miss H M Sykes made Honorary Member. Mrs N Howells made Chairman of Midland ELGA. Midland Girls hosted by Wrekin GC, winner Alison Johns (Lincs).
1987 Re-organisation of Welsh Counties; Denbighshire joined with Flintshire, Shropshire and Caenarvonshire & Angelsay stayed the same and a new County called Mid Wales was made up of all other North Wales Counties.
1988 – 92 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) employed by the Ladies European Tour as Tournament/Membership Secretary.
1991 Famous Grouse Coronation Foursomes regional final played at Rhuddlan Golf Club was won be Ann Jarvis and Pip Henshaw of Shrewsbury Golf Club.
1992 Mrs R Argles died.
1993 Rules of the association revised. LGU Centenary Foursomes winners; Mrs S Goulds & Mrs M Hanson (Wrekin)
1994 Wrekin GC hosted Sub Divisions with Staffordshire going through and winning English finals.
1994 Mrs J Brealey made Vice President.
1995 Mrs A Johns appointed Handicap Advisor. Scratch Score Assessor for Shropshire, Mrs Sue Pidgeon took over from Sue Westall, Warks. (previously looked after all the West Midland courses).
1995 Mrs Ann Johnson appointed International Team Captain for Wales.
1996 County reached Sub Divisional finals at Buxton GC
1996 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) won the English Seniors South Regional event at Ross on Wye GC.
1996 – 2005 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) played for the Midland Vets Team at their annual Jamborees versus, The North, South and Scotland.
1998 County reached Sub Divisional finals at Craddock GC
1998 Sarah Heath (Telford) won the Midland Girls Championship. In 1993 she was voted Golf World’s Junior player of the year.
1999 Sarah Heath (Telford) won the English Girls Championship and represented England in Girls and Ladies teams at the Home Internationals.
1999 Laura Archer (Lilleshall Hall) member of the Welsh Girls and Ladies Team that won both Girls and Ladies Home Internationals.
1999 Midland Girls Championship played at Shrewsbury GC – won by Sherri Hughes (Kington GC).
1999 Wrekin past County Champions Julie Clayton (nee Dingley), Sue Pidgeon & Jo Marvell hosted a cocktail party at the County Championships played at Wrekin GC.
1999 Natalie Adams (Hill Valley GC) joined the PGA and became a Teaching Professional.
1999 County reached the Sub Divisional finals at Abbotsley GC.
1999 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) won the English Seniors North Regional event at Copt Heath GC.
1999-2003 Sarah Heath (Telford) in the ELGA Elite Squad – played for the English Ladies Home International Team and represented England in the European Ladies’ Team Championships.
2002-3 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) elected Captain of Midland Vets.
2002 Shropshire Girls won the Midland League played at South Staffs GC.
2003 Sarah Heath (Shifnal) turned Professional and qualified to play on the Ladies European Tour.
2003 – Ann Johnson (Ludlow) played for the Welsh Senior Home International Team at Whittington Heath GC. She has now represented Wales at all 3 levels – Junior (Ann Hughes), Ladies and Senior. Ann qualified as a R&A Referee and was LGU Councillor for Wales.
2003 Sue Pidgeon was a semi-finalist in English Senior Championship at Ilkley GC losing to Vivien Saunders and was runner up in British Seniors at South Staffs GC to Christina Birke (Sweden) and qualified for the 2004 US Senior Open which she played in, at Pasatiempo GC, Santa Cruz in California.
2004 Following a number of changes to the LGU Handicapping system e.g. increased from 36 to 45 the Unified Handicap System introduced (CONGU).
2004 Sally Hinton won the ELGA Midland Ladies Championship at Bedford & County. Turned Professional in 2007 and joined the PGA as a Teaching Professional.
2005 Midland Ladies Championship held at Shrewsbury GC, won by Katrina Holford of Staffs.
2005-7 USGA rated all Shropshire courses. Most courses went up 1 or 2 strokes, 2 stayed the same and only the Church Stretton course came down by 1 shot.
2005 Wrekin GC in their centenary year, hosted the last match played between a team from the English Senior Ladies’ Golf Association and the Irish Senior Ladies. The ESGA was taken over by EWGA. Sally Goulds and Sue Pidgeon (both Wrekin) played.
2006 Sophie Stubbs (Shifnal) won the Bridget Jackson Trophy, national 36 hole event at Handsworth GC
2006 Sally Goulds appointed Deputy on ELGA Executive made Chair of EWGA Midlands North Region mid 2000 Mile End partnership of Janice Turner and Janice Taylor won through to the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes at St Andrews
2007 Welshpool no longer allowed to be part of SLCGA following the EWGA modernisation plan and funding from Golf England
2007 Sarah McGinley took over as Scratch Score Assessor.
2007-8 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) made President of the Midland Vets.
2007 SLCGA reached the last ever Midlands Sub-Divisional Championships at Redditch GC, Worcs.
2007 Shropshire Senior Team won the nett event at the Midland Vets Team Championship at Enville GC with Ros Moor (Bridgnorth) taking the individual nett prize. Church Stretton won through to the Mail on Sunday finals played in Spain and Isabel Green and Louise Beaumont won through to the Daily Mail Foursome finals.
2008 SLCGA took over organising and running Handicap (plus Mini) and Scratch Leagues.
2008 ELGA changed it’s name to EWGA and Midland ELGA disbanded now EWGA Midlands North Region made up of Shropshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire – first County week held at Willesley Park GC, Leics & Rutland.
2008 Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) won the English Senior’s Div B Championship at Stoneham GC, Hants.
2008 Vice Presidents – Sally Shrimpton and Jo Hargrove died.
2009 Midland North Region of the Australian Spoons held at Wrekin GC, with home winners Gill Hardman and Pat Wilson winning through to the national final at Pleasington GC, Lancs.
2010 Midland Ladies Championship held at Market Drayton GC, Lucy Evans (Wrekin) qualified and lost in the 1st round to eventual winner, Harriet Owers Bradley (Notts).
2010 Lucy Evans (Wrekin) won the EWGA Midlands North Region Girls Championships at Chevin GC, Derbyshire and was re-selected for EWGA regional coaching.
2011 Midland North Region’s Foursomes were held at Lilleshall Hall GC and won by Staffordshire pair of Sue Spencer and Emily Mumford.
2011 Shropshire Senior Team won the nett event at the Midland Vets Team Championship at Kedleston Park GC.
2011 November – Merger between EWGA and EGU approved now called England Golf
2013 Midland North County Week held at Hawkstone Park Golf Club
(A DVD of all the Midland ELGA record books was made when the regions changed, following the modernisation plan and a number of interesting facts concerning Shropshire players have been extracted and added to those recorded already in our Historical Notes, found in the SLCGA Records Book.)
